After two historic votes in Congress Argentina has legalized abortion within first 14 weeks of pregnancy. The homeland of Pope Francis takes a huge leap forward in the region with very conservative laws on that matter. In comparison, Latin America has only 3 other countries with legalized abortions: Guyana, Cuba and Uruguay to a certain extent. Mexico falls out of this category because it hugely various from place to place being legal in Mexico City compared to possible 30 years in prison for Guanajuato.
The efforts to make abortion legal in Argentina have been made for decades. Each time progress was evident with more votes in favor: another proof that democratic participation is worthwhile its efforts. Again, those in favor of abortion faced huge protests from their opposition. During the vote this was clearly visible outside of the Congress: pro-life protestors wore blue while pro-choice movement wore its recognizable color – green.
As the bill was passed it caused a huge delight among its supporters on the streets as women screamed in delight, happily jumped around and hugged their surrounding friends with joy. Some have been a part of pro-choice movement for decades so they had all reasons to celebrate victory together with a sudden relief freedom limitations.
