THE HUNTREES

Laura Codruța Kövesi (born on May 15, 1973) is currently the first European Chief Prosecutor who fittingly earned a nickname “The EU Corruption Huntress“. Previously she served as the youngest ever chief prosecutor of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate from 2013. Unfortunately but she was fired by Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader in 2018. And for what reason? She took her job too seriously and she actually prosecuted many criminals.

REVENGE IS SWEETER FROM THE HIGHER LEVEL

Fortunately for Laura, her talent and persistence for hunting criminals were well-recognized recognized on the EU level, and in 2019 she was nominated European Chief Prosecutor by the vast majority of EU member states (except Romania off course). Soon enough in 2020, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that her removal in Romania violated her right to free speech and the right to a fair trial. It did not take justice too long to avenge Laura and in the meantime, she became an avenger herself. Let’s have a look at some of her works of art:

  • Raised prosecution in Romania against 14 ministers, 43 Members of Parliament, and 260 local politicians
  • Investigated and prosecuted several thousand members of the Romanian underworld network
  • In 2015 alone her anticorruption office seized 431 million EUR of bribes

EPPO

Within the first 100 days of its foundation in 2017, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) initiated 300 investigations and issued 1700 reports against cases with possible misuse of 4,5 billion EU funds. It seems like Laura finally found her home and ever since she has been successfully rocking the EU underworld. So the next time you feel helpless about corruption just remember that somewhere out there Laura is watching your back and proving how it’s done and how IT CAN BE DONE!
